In support of their new studio release, “Mockingbird Time” (In Stores September 20th on Rounder Records), The Jayhawks will hit the road in September and October for a series of tour dates.  Click here for a full list of dates.  The band will start down south in Chatanooga for the River Rocks Festival and hit markets such as Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Asheville, and Atlanta.  One major highlight will be the band headlining the Beacon Theatre in New York on Friday, October 21st where they will be joined by Rosanne Cash. The second leg will start in Milwaukee and head towards Texas where the band will be play 4 shows in the Lone Star

Two years after the classic lineup of the Minneapolis country-rock group reunited, the quintet is still together and has recorded new material for a forthcoming album, tentatively titled Mockingbird Time. This year’s Taste of Chicago was scaled down from previous years. No fireworks. And fewer famous bands playing on the concert stage. That was supposed to be the idea, anyway. As it turned out, this year’s festival actually included more musical acts that interested me than usual. Alas, I missed seeing Loretta Lynn on Friday night, but I did catch the Jayhawks Saturday afternoon (July 2) at the Petrillo Bandshell. (more)

Photo by Marina ChavezDuring their heyday in the first half of the 1990s, the Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant folk-rock of the Byrds, the adventurousness of the Buffalo Springfield, the hippiebilly soulfulness of the Flying Burrito Brothers and the soaring harmonies of the Beach Boys. So it’s richly ironic that their reappearance coincides with a dramatic resurgence of the musical approach they played such a central role in perpetuating—but this time around, the Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions., and it’s their own legacy that they’re advancing.
